President Carolyn Wilson: Active Engagement Improves Care at University of Minnesota Medical Center

Carolyn Wilson, RN, has been the president of the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview in Minneapolis since 2011.

Carolyn Wilson uses active engagement to improve care at Univ. of Minn. Medical CenterMs. Wilson oversees the operations of the medical center, the Amplatz Children's Hospital and the integrated clinical service lines including cardiovascular, mothers' and children's, oncology and behavioral.

Through active engagement and partnership with Bobbi Daniels, MD, the CEO of the University of Minnesota Physicians, Ms. Wilson pushes the medical center to improve its clinical outcomes, patient experience and referring physician experience.

Ms. Wilson ramped up communication to provide timely information and updates, utilized electronic health records to build referral guidelines and expanded care models to provide enhanced coordination of care. Her focus on the vision and mission of the medical center has led it to earn clinical care excellence awards and national ranking for care in nine specialties.

Before serving as University of Minnesota Medical Center president, Ms. Wilson was the COO and associate dean for the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she held a variety of leadership roles over a period of 13 years. Prior to that, Ms. Wilson's professional experience included community hospital and nursing home experience, as well as a year as a staff nurse with the National Institutes of Health.
