CEO Dr. Gary Kaplan: Focused on Patient Safety at Virginia Mason

Gary Kaplan, MD, has served as chairman and CEO of the Seattle-based Virginia Mason Health System, which includes Virginia Mason Medical Center and the Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason, since 2000.

Dr. Kaplan earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and is board certified in internal medicine. In addition to serving as chairman and CEO, Dr. Kaplan also is a practicing physician and a clinical professor at the University of Washington in Seattle.

During his time at the helm, Virginia Mason has earned national recognition for its efforts to improve patient safety. The hospital was named the "Top Hospital of the Decade" for patient safety and quality by The Leapfrog Group. It is also one of only 238 hospitals nationwide to receive the 2011 HealthGrades patient safety excellence award.

Dr. Kaplan also helped deploy the Toyota Production System for healthcare management at Virginia Mason, which reduces the high cost of healthcare while improving quality, safety and efficiency.

Dr. Kaplan is a founding member of Health CEOs for Health Reform.
