CEO Douglas Hawthorne: Accountable Care Leader at Texas Health Resources

Douglas Hawthorne, FACHE, serves a CEO of Arlington-based Texas Health Resources, a health system comprised of 17 acute-care hospitals that are owned, operated, joint-ventured or affiliated with the system.

HawthorneMr. Hawthorne was instrumental in joining several area healthcare brands, including Presbyterian Healthcare Resources, Harris Methodist Hospitals and Arlington Memorial Hospital, together to form Texas Health Resources in 1997.

Besides aiding in the formation of the health system he now leads, Mr. Hawthorne also helped Texas Health Resources strike accountable care organization deals with Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas earlier this year. Further, partnered with North Texas Specialty Physicians, Texas Health Resources was selected to participate in CMS' Pioneer ACO model late in 2011.

Additionally, in 2011, Texas Health Resources agreed to collaborate with Dallas-based Methodist Health System on accountable care initiatives. "Both nonprofit health systems have strong faith-based foundations and are dedicated to the communities they serve," Mr. Hawthorne said in a news release announcing the partnership. "Geographically the service areas of the two systems are complementary. Given today's challenging healthcare environment, it makes sense for us to look for opportunities to optimize resources and work together to improve the health of our communities."

When he's not busy at the helm of Texas Health Resources, Mr. Hawthorne spends time serving the healthcare and local communities. He has served as the chair of the Health Leadership Council Executive Task Force on the Uninsured, a board member of Premier, chairman of North Texas LEAD Initiative and a board member of LHP Hospital Group. He has also been heavily involved in Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Hawthorne has received much national recognition for his pioneering work in healthcare. For example, in 2012, Becker's Hospital Review named Mr. Hawthorne on its list of 300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know. He has also been recognized on the state level, having received the Diversity Ambassador of the Year Award from the American Red Cross Chisholm Trail chapter and the Texas Hospital Association Trustee Award, among many other awards.

Mr. Hawthorne earned a master's degree in healthcare administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, where he grew up.
