Will IT spending change in 2017? 5 insights

Findings about projected IT spending in the coming year are conflicted, according to a CEB survey reported in the Wall Street Journal.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Median IT budgets are expected to remain constant in 2017.

2. However, the survey notes that historical data suggests spending may increase around 2 percent.

3. Almost 90 percent of the 150 IT practitioners included in the survey expect that their IT budgets will change next year; about half of respondents expect IT budgets to increase.

4. Cloud spending is expected to increase in the coming years, while spending on external IT services, like contractors, is expected to decline.

5. A recent Gartner report projected that global IT spending will decline in 2016, but will increase by 2.9 percent in 2017, reaching $3.5 trillion.
