Why health systems should embrace technology, innovation

Craig Kinyon, president and CEO of Richmond, Ind.-based Reid Health, said that as healthcare deals with financial challenges, the importance of technology and innovation at times like this is "undeniable."

"Now, more than ever, we must further prioritize innovation and technology to build a resilient healthcare system that can weather any storm," Mr. Kinyon said via LinkedIn.

The CEO said that while many challenges persist for the healthcare industry, there are opportunities. One is healthcare's ability to innovate and use technology.

He highlighted four pillars on how technology can achieve resilience for healthcare organizations:

  1. Efficiency and cost management: "Advanced health information systems, AI-driven analytics, and robotic process automation have the power to revolutionize how we deliver care," he said. If healthcare organizations can streamline processes, reduce administrative burdens, and optimize workflows, they can enhance patient outcomes and "achieve substantial cost savings."

  2. Enhanced patient experience: The digital era has empowered patients with more control over their healthcare journey. From telehealth consultations and remote monitoring to personalized treatment plans and health apps, embracing innovation ensures that patients receive the convenience, accessibility, and personalized care they deserve, he wrote.

  3. Breakthrough research and treatment: "Technology advancements, such as genetic sequencing, precision medicine, and data-driven clinical decision support systems, have opened new frontiers in research and treatment," Mr. Kinyon said. According to the CEO, using cutting-edge tools gives healthcare professionals the ability to unlock new discoveries and customize therapies to individual patients.

  4. Health equity and access: "Innovation in healthcare can bridge the gaps in access, especially in underserved communities," he said. With telemedicine, mobile health clinics and remote monitoring patients who have previously struggled to receive care can now get it.

"Embracing technology ensures that healthcare is not just a privilege for the few, but a right for all," according to Mr. Kinyon.
