WellCare reports data breach caused by coding error

WellCare Health Plan has notified more than 500 patients in New York state, of a data breach, according to a Democrat & Chronicle report.

The payer learned on Nov. 3 that a vendor's computer coding error caused denial letters to be sent to the wrong members, according to the report.

Breached information included patient names, addresses, member ID numbers and general descriptions of the procedure. No Social Security numbers or financial information were compromised, according to the report.
