'Watson for Oncology' debuts in US

IBM's 'Watson for Oncology' will go live at Florida-based Jupiter Medical Center at the beginning of March, marking the technology's first deployment at a U.S. community hospital.

Watson for Oncology, which was trained at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, is a cloud-based platform that mines information from more than 300 medical journals and more than 200 textbooks to provide clinical decision support. The AI platform can identify relevant treatment options and administration instructions for individual patients, which it reports to the clinician.

The cognitive computing platform will be able to assist clinicians treating breast, lung, colorectal, gastric, cervical and ovarian cancer patients. In 2017, IBM and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center plan to train Watson on at least 9 more cancer types.

Watson for Oncology has already been deployed at Bangkok, Thailand-based Bumrungrad International Hospital; Incheon, South Korea-based Gachon University Gil Medical Center and Manipal Hospitals in India.
