Walgreens ventures into gamification to boost medication adherence

Walgreens has partnered with HealthPrize Technologies to offer a patient engagement and medication adherence platform for customers filling certain prescriptions on the Walgreens website. The platform, HealthPrize Action Engine, uses gamification techniques to motivate and engage with patients.

Action Engine uses condition-related quizzes, surveys, health tips, competitions, leaderboards and scorecards to help patients engage with and learn about their conditions. Doing so may help them remain adherent to their medications.

The program will partner with certain pharmaceutical companies, and the platform will be offered for patients filling those brand-name drugs. The pharmaceutical companies must commit as sponsors to the program for their drugs to be included on the platform, reports Chicago Tribune.

"We are continuing to innovate in digital health, enhancing our services and solutions to extend the basic care our pharmacists provide for our patients," said Greg Orr, Walgreens Boots Alliance senior director of digital health, in a statement.

The platform is expected to be ready for partners in diabetes in the third quarter of this year. By the end of the year, the platform is expected to roll out for additional conditions, including gastrointestinal conditions, high cholesterol, depression, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
