The breach was caused when a UW Medicine employee opened an email attachment that contained malware. The malware was detected the next day but had already taken control of a computer that contained patient records and had accessed 90,000 UW Medicine patients’ data.
UW Medicine has notified affected patients and the appropriate authorities, and employees are undergoing additional security training.
