“This tremendous honor is a tribute to the dedication and hard work of everyone associated with our truly stellar team here at the University of Iowa,” said Lee Carmen, associate vice president for information systems with Des Moines-based University of Iowa Health Care, in a news release. “Their commitment to innovative care, excellent service and exceptional outcomes is unsurpassed, and all of us take deep pride in being one of the national leaders in healthcare informatics.”

Currently, just 4.3 percent of the more than 20,000 ambulatory clinics in the HIMSS database have reached stage 7. Providers at this stage are able to share health information with outside providers, have advanced clinical decision support software, offer patients an online portal and can use the EMR to gather clinical and business intelligence, among other capabilities.
