The breach, caused by a former employee who accessed billing records outside the parameters of his or her job, occurred over five months between Jan. 7 and May 7, 2014, according to a Jan. 30 , 2015news release from the hospital.
The investigation has been ongoing since April 9, when the medical group informed law enforcement. In August 2014, law enforcement’s investigation discovered that officers had come across an unauthorized person in possession of copies of patient billing documents.
UMass Memorial Medical Group has established a dedicated call center for patients concerned about their data confidentiality and said in the news release that it is working toward strengthening its privacy safeguards and reinforcing staff regarding policies and procedures.
