Cerner hired Kansas City-based Patti Banks Associates — which is doing business as Vireo — to plan its campus’ landscaping.
“Trees, shrubs and perennials were selected to address the ever-changing Kansas City climate and provide season interest throughout the year,” said Brett Spangler, Vireo’s lead architect on the project, according to a Cerner blog post.
The more than 60 species of trees and plants that will be put on the campus will certainly mirror the city’s seasons. These include oak trees, linden trees and various prairie grasses, which are intended to honor the native plants discovered by pioneers while trekking west across the nation.
“Whether it’s the early pop of color from spring bulbs [or] the recognizable blooms of coneflowers or the dramatic colors of the trees and prairie grasses in the fall, there will be evolving color, textures and forms in every season,” Mr. Spangler said, according to the blog post.
The 4.7 million-square-foot campus will be completed by the end of 2016.
