Texas Governor Signs Healthcare Privacy Law

In an effort to protect patient healthcare data even further, Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed HB 300, a healthcare privacy law that sets up state oversight and enforcement of health data privacy, according to a GovInfo Security report.

The law will go into effect in Sept. 2012, and it will include stricter civil penalties for violations, the report said.

Other provisions in the law include an explicit ban on selling personal health information for profit, state licensing agencies conducting compliance audits and required training for staff of HIPAA covered entities on federal and state health information law.
