Google will partner with Included Health to launch a nationwide randomized study evaluating how conversational artificial intelligence performs in real-world virtual care workflows.
Here are four things to know about the study:
- Pending Institutional Review Board approval, the study will recruit consented participants nationwide and use a randomized controlled trial design to assess how the AI performs in clinical workflows at scale, moving beyond simulated environments and retrospective data.
- According to a Feb. 3 press release, the study aims to measure the capabilities and limitations of conversational medical AI in managing patient interactions in virtual care workflows, compared with standard clinical practice, across a range of patient concerns and geographic regions.
- Google said the research is part of a phased approach intended to generate more evidence on patient and clinician experience, safety and usefulness as the technology is tested in increasingly real-world settings.
- The companies said the nationwide randomized study is intended to raise the standard of evidence generation for medical AI by shifting from lab-based demonstrations and small feasibility work to a large-scale trial in real-world virtual care.
