Here are three things to know about the center.
1. The center, which houses three telemedicine carts, focuses on supporting local healthcare facilities with research, development and education related to remote care technologies. It does not provide clinical care services.
2. Students at the nursing school have access to the telemedicine equipment to practice conducting remote assessments with video conferencing and digital otoscopes. Staff at the center also help nearby rural hospitals get their telemedicine programs up and running.
3. Mohammad T. Khasawneh, PhD, professor and chair of systems science and industrial engineering in the university’s Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science, and Ann Fronczek, PhD, RN, assistant professor at the Decker School of Nursing, lead the center.
“With the new center, we are able to expand simulation and clinical experiences for students as well as offer opportunities for the local community to explore possibilities in telemedicine,” Dr. Fronczek said. “We can expose students to telemedicine and technologies that they may or may not have a chance to experience during their clinical rotations.”
