Almost all of the respondents, 99 percent, reported that population health management is “essential for healthcare transformation at a national level in the United States.” However, the plurality, 47 percent, said their current population health initiatives were only somewhat successful in providing more cost effective interventions.
Moving forward, IBM Institute for Business Value identified two key trends: precision medicine and cognitive computing. The majority, 61 percent, said genomic data tops their needs by 2020, and 55 percent plan to leverage cognitive computing for precision medicine by 2020. The majority, 64 percent, also plan to use cognitive computing in overall population health management programs by 2020.
