The standard method of notification about a data hack is by standard mail, but many customers received emails from scammers who designed the emails to look like Anthem, offering them a free year of credit monitoring. Other scammers are cold-calling current and former Anthem customers on the telehone, according to KrebsOnSecurity.
Anthem has said it will begin mailing out notifications next week, so customers should ignore these emails to protect their information, according to the report. Any credit monitoring offered to customers via email is false, according to the company’s website.
“Anthem is not calling members regarding the cyber attack and is not asking for credit card information or Social Security numbers over the phone,” Anthem’s website said.
