Q is the product of five recorded voices that have been edited to attain a neutral range of pitches. It was developed through a collaboration between organizations including creative agency Virtue and EqualAI, an initiative that aims to prevent unconscious bias in artificial intelligence development.

While Q’s developers hope to add the virtual assistant to areas such as personal technology devices to public transit systems, the technology does not yet have AI capabilities, according to the report.

Big tech companies like Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft have released virtual assistants with female voices, some of which are being used in healthcare settings. Amazon’s Alexa-powered platform Aiva was recently deployed as part of a pilot program at Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai to assist patients with interacting with members of their care team.
