Seven new billing codes will reimburse physicians for telemedicine well visits, behavioral and mental health visits and several other outpatient services.
The proposal also expands the geographic qualification for telemedicine reimbursement, using the Office of Rural Health Policy’s more liberal definition of rural rather than strictly limiting telemedicine services to patients located outside a metropolitan statistical area.
CMS will accept comments on the proposed rule through Sept. 2.
