President Obama deems October National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Cybersecurity is getting some extra attention this month as President Barack Obama named October 2016 National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

In his proclamation deeming this month National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, President Obama outlined key initiatives the administration has taken in recent months to bolster cybersecurity efforts, such as the Cybersecurity National Action Plan, which created the first-ever federal CISO position and proposed increased the cybersecurity budget by more than a third.

"The rise of the internet has brought incredible opportunity and new ways of innovating and enhancing our way of life — but with great potential also comes heightened risk to our data," reads the proclamation. "Keeping America safe requires us to bolster our security online. This month, we renew our commitment to ensuring our information is more secure, our data is safer, and our families and businesses are more protected than ever before."
