When asked if patients own their medical records, 54 percent of the 1,102 patients surveyed and 38 percent of the 1,406 physicians surveyed said yes. When asked if physicians own patient medical records, 23 percent of patients and 39 percent of physicians said yes.
Despite the split on ownership, 96 percent of both patients and physicians believed patients should be able to see their EHRs. There was another split, however, if this access should include unedited physician notes — 89 percent of patients believe they have the right to see all of their physician’s notes, compared with 64 percent of physicians.
