Cerner, athenahealth integrating with HealthKit

Cerner and athenahealth are working with Apple to develop ways to integrate their technology with Apple's new mobile health platform, HealthKit, according to a Reuters report.

Both EHR companies have developed apps that will help providers better monitor at-home patients with chronic conditions, according to the report. The apps will use the data aggregation features of HealthKit to pull information entered into other apps or collected through blood pressure cuffs or other devices and send it directly to providers' EHRs.

The apps will be available by the end of the month, along with other HealthKit apps. HealthKit was scheduled to be released with the iOS 8 update Wednesday, but was delayed by discovery of a bug in the software.

The HealthKit platform already integrates with Epic EHRs through Epic's MyChart app. Two Epic customers, Stanford (Calif.) Children's Health and Duke Medicine in Durham, N.C., have launched pilots to begin using HealthKit to monitor patients with chronic conditions.
