Phase 1 winners revealed for health data aggregator, user experience app ONC challenges

The ONC has named Phase 1 winners of two of its app challenges that asked entrants to use the Fast Healthcare Interoperabilty Resources standard and open application programming interfaces to address consumer health data aggregation and provider user experience.

Karen DeSalvo, MD, national coordinator, announced the app challenges at this year's HIMSS annual conference. Now, the ONC has named the four winners of each challenge that will advance to the second phase of the competition. Each winning team received $15,000.

The four winners of the first phase of the ONC Consumer Health Data Aggregator Challenge are Green Circle Health, HealthCentrix, Medyear and Metro Star Systems.

The four winners of the first phase of the ONC Provider User Experience Challenge are Herald Health, PHRASE Health, University of Utah Health Care/Intermountain Healthcare/Duke Health System and Well Sheet.

Where the first phase required applicants to submit plans for their proposed apps, including designs, technical specifications, business plans and proposed vendors and providers to test their apps, the second phase of the competition will test the apps themselves. Phase 2 still is accepting submissions, even if entrants did not submit to the first phase.

"It is exciting to see the level of innovation that is taking place in health IT today," said Vindell Washington, MD, principal deputy national coordinator, when announcing the phase 1 winners at an event in Washington, D.C., Monday. "The apps that these challenges will produce have the potential to spur real-world improvements for individuals and clinicians throughout the health system."
