One-year after $235M hospitals purchase, California county CIO departs for position at Dell

Ann Durkin, CIO of Santa Clara County, Calif., who spearheaded the county’s IT efforts during its $235 million hospitals purchase last year, is leaving her post to join Dell, according to a Jan. 29 Government Technology report.

Five things to know:

1. Ms. Durkin’s new position at Dell is not entirely clear, but she described it as “a strategy role related to state and local government in the western” regions of the U.S. and Canada, according to the report.

2. As CIO of Santa Clara County, Ms. Durkin oversaw IT services for 42 agencies and three hospitals.

3. In Dec. 2018, the county spent $235 million to purchase O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, Calif., St. Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, Calif., and the De Paul Health Center in Morgan Hill, Calif.

4. As part of the acquisition, Ms. Durkin led a five-month implementation of an Epic HealthLink EHR. Santa Clara county added 300 new IT employees to assist with the EHR go live and onboarded about 2,000 new employees at the hospitals.

5. Prior to serving as CIO at Santa Clara County, Ms. Durkin was CIO for the federal EPA.
