ONC to Give RECs $12M to Help Critical Access, Rural Hospitals

The Office of the National Coordinator will grant more than $12 million in additional funding to regional extension centers in order to assist critical access and rural hospitals in achieving meaningful use, according to a Healthcare IT News report.

RECs were created last year under the HITECH portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to provide technical assistance and support to healthcare providers switching from paper-based medical practice to EHRs. The ONC anticipates each REC will need $18,000 for each critical access and rural hospital it supports in addition to the funding they will receive in the base REC grant.

Jan. 12 is the application deadline for the grant.
