The Direct Project is a set of specifications that, when implemented within a strong policy framework, enable secure point-to-point electronic messaging between healthcare participants.

The ONC’s guidelines provide recommended policies for health information service providers. The ONC encourages HISPs to provide direct services to providers and hospitals for meaningful use stage 2, and encourages HISPs to receive accreditation through DirectTrust, a nonprofit trade organization.

The new guidelines also cover the operation of Security and Trust Agents by HISPs and recommend practices for Certificate Authorities, which issue certificates to HISPs and other organizations that convey Direct messages.
