#NHITWeek Day 1: Focus on Blue Button

Blue Button technology took center stage Monday, the first day of National Health IT Week.

At the Consumer Health IT Summit, Blue Button figured prominently in discussions on how to better engage patients in their care. The technology is currently used by 500 organizations to make it easier for patients to access their electronic medical records, and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT expects that number to grow. ONC also announced the impending launch of the Blue Button Connector, a consumer-facing website listing the providers and health plans using Blue Button.

ONC also announced the winners of its Blue Button + app challenge, which tasked developers with creating an app that implements and uses Blue Button + functionality. The winning app, GenieMD, includes data from multiple providers through Blue Button +, as well as patient services like a symptom checker and a pharmacy locator.
