The tweet read, “We regret to inform our fans that our commissioner, Roger Goodell, has passed away. He was 57. #RIP.”
The tweet has since been deleted, along with two other tweets the NFL said were not posted by the league, according to ESPN.
“We have engaged law enforcement to look into the matter. We are reviewing and strengthening our cybersecurity measures,” Brian McCarthy, the NFL’s vice president of communications, said in a statement.
As for Mr. Goodell, he is alive and making light of the incident, tweeting, “Man, you leave the office for 1 day of golf…& your own network kills you off. #harsh.”
