NewYork-Presbyterian Selects Winners of Patient Engagement Solutions Contest

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has chosen the winners of its first "hackathon," an app development contest designed to find innovative ways to improve the patient experience.

First place and $50,000 went to Health Warriors, developers of PresbyHangouts. The app allows the hospital's inpatients connect with each other based on common interests, and users can message or play games with other patients in the hospital. The app is designed to foster a sense of community within the hospital, as well as provide an engaging platform that caregivers can also use to send patients educational materials.

Second place and $25,000 went to Bogney, developers of Intermed. This app connects patients to each other based on common interests or conditions and sets up mentor-like relationships between patients. Users can also connect with family or friends outside the hospital through social media and access meditation and other relaxation instructions and resources.

Third place and $10,000 went to Some Team, developers of Presbyterian Plus. This app aims to streamline the check-in process for patients and foster healthy activities by developing an incentive system that rewards patients for coming to physician appointments and demonstrating medication adherence.

"We saw a number of creative and well-executed ideas, so picking only three winners was extremely difficult," said Aurelia Boyer, senior vice president and CIO at NewYork-Presbyterian, in a news release. "Our plan now is to reach out to all of the participants with innovative concepts to continue to engage and learn more about how they could potentially help patients at NewYork-Presbyterian."
