Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center EMR trainer Polly Oetting and facility planner Jennifer DeWinne collaborated with a VA employee at another facility to develop the “My VA Way” app, which uses a Google-based indoor GPS.
The app project was conceived to address VA hospitals’ outdated building maps, which make it difficult for veterans to navigate the facilities. “Heck, I get lost trying to find my way around this facility, and I’ve been here four years,” Ms. Oetting told the Albuquerque Journal.
The “My VA Way” team awarded a contract to an outside company, which will have two months to create an app prototype. The team will roll out the prototype to five VA hospitals for up to three months for testing.
After testing, Ms. Oetting’s goal is to deploy the app at VA hospitals across the U.S. within the next year.
