Network flow: Improving the speed of the internet multiple times without need for new hardware

Dr. Shahram Rahimi was recognized, along with two of his colleagues, by Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor Carlo Montemagno for a patent entitled, Multicast Routing Protocol for Computer Networks.

This newly awarded patent is on a new algorithm for network flow which improves the speed of the internet multiple times without any need for new hardware upgrades. The recognition was given on Thursday, November 30th at the event: Celebrating Inventors and Innovators held at the Dunn Richmond Economic Development Center and was in celebration of SIU’s 100+ patents.

ABSTRACT: The present technology comprises a method and apparatus for a routing protocol for a router including an apparatus and method for distance vector multicast routing. The method and apparatus as disclosed and claimed offers a new interpretation of the routing information stored in a DVMRP routing table. This interpretation relates to the knowledge of the locations of a multicast source router and the routers connected to hosts with group members in a DVMRP domain. The methodology exploits this knowledge to create two conditional packet forwarding checks, based on pseudo-diameter and super-pseudo-diameter respectively, and used these conditions to extend the two phases of the existing DVMRP to improve its performance from the viewpoint of much better utilization of bandwidth. Dr. Rahimi, is the Professor and Chair of Computer Science at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL and the Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer at Potentia Analytics, Inc. He is a recognized leader in artificial intelligence research with over 190 publications, as well, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Computational Intelligence and sits on IEEE’s Committee for New Standards.

He also founded Potentia Analytics in 2013, originally as R&B Soft, with Dr. Sean Bozorgzadeh who is currently the site medical director for the Emergency Department at Peace Health / United General Hospital in Sedro-Woolley, WA. Dr. Rahimi is a computer scientist with a passion for healthcare and Dr. Bozorgzadeh is a doctor with a passion for computer science. They started looking at how to shorten the time for new technology to go from academia into the mainstream market with a focus on healthcare as they saw the massive transition beginning to happen with respect to both technology in healthcare and how healthcare service is provided.

Today, Potentia Analytics, Inc. is a leading provider of advanced workforce and workflow optimization solutions for healthcare including Symphony: Intelligent Provider Scheduling, Bernoulli: ER Patient Flow Optimization and PotentiaGT: Policy and Decision-Making. The flagship product Symphony is currently used to schedule providers at over seven hundred and fifty hospitals in forty-nine US states, with committed expansion to over nine hundred locations by early next year. Approximately eight thousand healthcare providers are scheduled every month, representing over one million shift hours.
