Mobile health apps reached 3.2B downloads in 2016, but popularity is decreasing: 5 takeaways

There are almost 260,000 mobile health apps available in major app stores; however, demand for these products is expected to slow, according to a research2guidance report.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Almost 100,000 mobile health apps and 13,000 mobile health app publishers have entered the market since the beginning of last year.

2. Smaller mobile health app companies with only one or two founders are earning a greater share of the market than in previous years, increasing from 8 percent to 13 percent in the last year.

3. Most publishers believe patients will not spend more than $10 for a mobile health app service.

4. Traditional app stores are the primary distribution channel for mobile health apps; interest in integrating apps into the healthcare system has decreased over the past year.

5. Even with 3.2 billion mobile health app downloads in the past year, the growth rate for downloads is expected to be at only 7 percent for 2016, compared with the growth rate of 35 percent experienced in 2015.
