The decision to close the facility is part of Microsoft’s effort to shift its sales focus to cloud services rather than server and desktop products, which will involve laying off thousands of employees.
The 70,000-square-foot Wilsonville facility produced Microsoft’s Surface Hub touch-screen digital whiteboard, which Microsoft will continue to develop at a facility in Redmond, Wash. Officials did not disclose where the device would be manufactured once the plant closes.
Microsoft will also lay off 124 hardware, mechanical and electrical engineers, designers, researchers and manufacturing-line operators at the facility in two rounds. The company will dismiss 61 employees in September. The remaining 63 employees will be able to stay until November, although some may be asked to continue work until the operation’s close.
Microsoft acquired the Wilsonville plant in 2012.
