Mayo Clinic, UnitedHealth Group Affiliate to Partner on Data Mining

Cambridge, Mass.-based Optum and Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic have jointly launched Optum Labs, an open and collaborative research and development facility, allowing the organizations to combine extensive deidentified clinical and claims data to help care providers create the most effective approaches to care.

Optum is the health services technology division of UnitedHealth Group in Minneapolis.

According to the release, Optum Labs will combine Mayo Clinic’s extensive clinical insights with Optum’s rich data, healthcare claims information and other resources to help physicians better understand all aspects of the patient care experience and refine approaches to care. Optum Labs will support patient care improvements in many areas, such as:

• Finding optimal treatments for conditions in a given setting
• Understanding variations in care
• Examining the effectiveness of patient care programs and approaches
