Maryland Goes Live With Statewide HIE

Maryland went live today with its statewide health information exchange, according to a Chesapeake Regional Information System for our Patients news release.

A Health Information Exchange, or HIE, is the infrastructure that supports private and secure flow of health information among physician practices, hospitals, labs, radiology centers and other healthcare facilities.

Maryland organizations now active in the HIE include Holy Cross Hospital, Suburban Hospital, Montgomery General Hospital, Community Radiology, Advanced Radiology, American Radiology Services, Quest Diagnostics and the Laboratory Corporation of America.

Several more organizations will be connected to the HIE in the next few weeks, according to the release. Other Maryland hospitals, physician practices and clinics will be online before the end of the year, including federally qualified clinics which predominantly serve Medicaid, uninsured and underserved patients.

The HIE's activation comes after all 48 Maryland hospitals — a total of 11,175 in-patient beds — recently committed to sharing data with the statewide HIE.  The goal is to provide patient-centered care that is safer, more timely and efficient while also preventing medical mistakes, particularly those that may arise in an emergency, according to the release.

CRISP is working to expand the types of data HIE is able to exchange, from daily discharge summaries, lab results and radiology results to  medical documents that contain more complete medical information, sometimes referred to as continuity of care documents, or CCDs.
