Majority of Canadian physicians now use EHRs

Two recent studies revealed that more Canadian physicians, nurses and pharmacists are using EHRs, according to Canadian Healthcare Technology.

Both articles were published in BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making.

The first article, "Measuring interoperable EHR adoption and maturity: A Canadian example," found that as of March 31, 2015, approximately 91,235 healthcare providers utilized at least two EHR components. One year later, 139,000 Canadian healthcare professionals utilized at least two EHR components, a jump of more than 50 percent.

The second article, "The value of connected health information: Perceptions of electronic health users in Canada," found Canadian EHR users reported better quality of care and access to patient data.

"The evidence confirms that the use of the interoperable EHR systems built by the provinces, territories and their many partners over the past 15 years is delivering patient care benefits and improvements for providers as intended," said Michael Green, president and CEO of Canada Health Infoway, a nonprofit organization that helps systems more quickly adopt digital health solutions.
