For the report, HIMSS analyzed data from 166 U.S. health information security professionals that detail their organization’s cybersecurity efforts.

Here are five things to know:

1. Cybersecurity incidents are “a new universal experience” for hospitals and health systems.

2. One of the most common forms of a security breach is initiated by bad actors who use emails to compromise the integrity of hospitals and health systems.

3. If hospitals and health systems remain complacent with their current cybersecurity practices, they could put their programs at risk. While the practices may not be “bad,” they should constantly be evaluated and updated if necessary.

4. There are clear gaps within organization’s legacy systems to identify and prevent phishing attacks. This leaves hospitals and health systems extremely vulnerable.

5. There is evidence that hospitals and health systems may be allocating more of their IT budgets to cybersecurity.
