Laura Smith. Vice President and CIO of UnityPoint Health (West Des Moines, Iowa). Ms. Smith became vice president and CIO of UnityPoint Health in 2016 and in the past year has launched a supply chain management software stabilization upgrade and EMR optimization initiative. Since taking the helm of the health system’s 600-member IT department, Ms. Smith has overseen around 1,500 general technology enhancements and her team implemented an EHR security overhaul, consolidating more than 120 security templates down to 19. She also has an eye for patient-facing enhancements, overseeing efforts to reduce the number of beeps, clicks and other inappropriate noises during care. She worked with three of the health system’s community hospitals to connect to IT services and continues to implement a culture where team members are empowered to do their best work. From 2009 to 2014, Ms. Smith served as UnityPoint Health’s IT executive director.
