IT employees make up less than half of tech industry, report finds

More than half of individuals in the IT workforce are employed in other industries, not technology companies, according to a CompTIA report.

Three notes:

1. While 46 percent of tech jobs are at tech companies, the remaining 54 percent of IT workers are employed in other industries, including healthcare and transportation.

2. In 2018, the U.S. saw a 2.3 percent increase in tech jobs from the previous year.

3. If the pace of growth continues, 8.6 million new tech jobs could be created over the decade between 2006 and 2016.

"Companies are experiencing new challenges which may require a modernization of functional capabilities," Craig Stephenson, senior partner and managing director of the North American technology officers' practice at Korn/Ferry International, an executive-search firm, told The Wall Street Journal. The shift to incorporate IT into business strategies and revenue generation has fueled other industries' increase in hiring tech workers.
