William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital (Madison, Wis.). William S. Middleton Memorial VA Hospital’s conservation improved after the facility established its Green Environmental Management System in June 2005. The policy guide aims to encourage employees to practice sustainability and lessen the hospital’s carbon footprint. GEMS also helped establish a variety of the hospital’s current sustainability efforts, including innovative ways to recycle fluorescent light bulbs, used oil, wood and organic materials. In 2017, Practice Greenhealth awarded the hospital the organization’s Greenhealth Emerald Award.
