Mr. Nelson served as VHA’s part-time president from 1977 to 1981, when he was CEO of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
Mr. Nelson also was the CEO of Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind., and Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. He eventually helped lead the merger that formed Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
