Pittsburgh-based UPMC’s venture capital arm, UPMC Enterprises, has launched its second company in partnership with venture-builder Redesign Health.

The new company, Glimmer Health, supports primary care physicians in delivering comprehensive chronic pain management, according to a May 12 news release. It offers an integrated platform modeled after UPMC’s network of multimodal pain management clinics, which develop treatment plans combining physical therapy, medications, mental health support and other individualized strategies.

Glimmer Health embeds nurse practitioners, care managers and social workers trained in pain care into primary care practices. These professionals assist patients with assessments, care coordination and treatment adherence, aiming to reduce unnecessary referrals, streamline communication and improve outcomes.

The platform builds on more than a decade of work at UPMC’s pain clinics led by Ajay Wasan, MD, professor of anesthesiology and psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and vice chair for pain medicine at Pitt and UPMC.

The announcement comes shortly after Redesign Health and Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai announced plans to launch a new platform aimed at building and scaling companies that address critical healthcare challenges.
