University of Vermont Medical Center (Burlington).The University of Vermont Medical Center’s sustainability and conservation efforts began with the work of one nurse in 1989. Now, the health system boasts a LEED Gold-certified oncology center and regularly engages in initiatives such as collecting single-use medical devices and utilizing energy-efficient technology, such as LED lights, across all the health system’s facilities. In 2014, UVM began a recycling project to reuse the blue medical wrap hospitals use to sterilize medical instruments prior to and during surgery. The health system received the 2017 Practice Greenhealth Top 25 Environmental Excellence Award.
