Sacramento, Calif.-based UC Davis Health has launched a pilot program in its emergency medicine department to train residents to use artificial intelligence-powered note-taking technology during patient encounters.
The program at UC Davis Medical Center trains residents to use a generative AI tool that transcribes clinical conversations and produces draft medical notes in real time. Residents are taught to apply the tool during patient visits, review the generated notes and understand potential risks associated with its use, according to a March 11 news release.
The technology used in the pilot, Abridge, records patient-clinician conversations and converts them into structured clinical documentation, including medical history, physical exam findings and medical decision-making. Physicians review and edit the notes before they are uploaded to the patient’s medical record.
The emergency medicine pilot is the first program at UC Davis Health to train residents to use an AI scribe.
“We’re preparing the next generation of physicians to use these tools safely and effectively while also helping restore the human connection in the physician-patient relationship,” Jason Yeates Adams, MD, professor of medicine and chair of the Health Analytics Core, said in the news release.
