The hospital closed its trauma center in 1988 for financial reasons. Currently, the city has four trauma centers but none are close to the South Side community. According to the news report, the deceased youth was three blocks from the medical center when he was shot and had to be transported nine miles away to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Hospital officials said operating an expensive trauma unit would necessitate cuts to other medical offerings.
