“One of the [really bizarre] things to do is speculate in technology about the future,” Mr. Nadella said.
Here are the three core technologies Mr. Nadella believes with shape Microsoft’s future.
1. Mixed reality. Mixed reality is a “dial you get to set,” he said. It ranges from augmented reality to virtual reality and could be applied to video games, mobile phones or wearable computers.
2. Artificial intelligence. AI is needed to operate mixed reality. For example, the company’s Hololens virtual reality device uses AI to process data coming from the sensors to craft a compelling visual effect.
3. Quantum computing. Quantum computing allows for data to be represented in different states, so the processing power available to developers is increased and more datasets can be modeled.
