4 things to know about Google’s AI research costs

In 2014, Google acquired U.K.-based artificial intelligence startup DeepMind for $525 million (£400 million) and has since invested heavily in AI research, reports Quartz.

Here are four things to know about the costs associated with Google’s AI research arm, DeepMind.

1. DeepMind lost $162 million (£123.5 million) last year, according to information filed with the U.K. government.

2. That year, the company generated $52.7 million (£40.2 million) in revenue.

3. It also faced a $53.6 million (£41.1 million) management service fee that covered costs like real estate and maintenance of its computers. 

4. DeepMind incurred $137 million (£104.7 million) for expenses related to staffing — this is more than double its staffing expenses in 2015.
