Providence expands AI patient scores to 28 hospitals

Renton, Wash.-based Providence is expanding an artificial intelligence platform that creates medical necessity scores to predict the level of care patients will need to 28 hospitals.

The health system first deployed Xsolis’ AI and predictive analytics software at eight hospitals in Oregon and plans to bring it to more facilities across that state as well as Alaska, Montana, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington.

“Expanding our collaboration with Xsolis not only streamlines crucial utilization review processes but also sets a new standard in healthcare by leveraging AI to focus our valuable clinical resources on our core mission — caring for our patients and serving the communities across the Pacific Northwest and beyond,” said Adar Palis, group vice president of clinical and revenue cycle applications at Providence, in a July 30 statement.

Providence and Xsolis said the tool helped reduce observation length of stay by 32% in its first eight months of use, with Xsolis estimating the cost savings at $33.6 million. The company provides constantly updating AI-powered medical necessity scores for patients to reduce administrative work and accelerate utilization review and case management. Providence also plans to extend the platform to its networked health plans.
