The Orlando (Fla.) VA Health Care System is implementing ambient artificial intelligence technology to assist with clinical documentation.
The tool listens to clinician-patient conversations and generates draft medical notes in real time. Clinicians can review, edit and finalize the notes.
In a Jan. 27 news release, the health system said veterans will be notified when the technology is in use and may decline participation at any time. The tool does not alter how care is delivered or how medical decisions are made, officials said.
The VA said the technology functions within its secure systems and complies with federal privacy and security standards, including HIPAA. Staff will be trained in its proper use, and the health system said it will continue evaluating and refining its implementation.
