NYU Langone launched 20 startups last year. Its next commercial product is an AI oncology tool.
New York City-based NYU Langone Health’s Technology Opportunities and Ventures office, which turns the health system’s research and clinical work into commercial products, had a busy fiscal year 2025. The office helped launch 20 startup companies and signed more than 100 license agreements for NYU technology in fiscal year 2025 alone, a NYU Langone spokesperson told Becker’s. Over the years, that work has generated significant revenue that NYU Langone reinvests into research and patient care.
That machinery is now being pointed at Solavia Decision Suite, an oncology decision support platform NYU Langone co-developed with Boston-based Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Embedded directly in the electronic health record, Solavia gives physicians real-time access to evidence, biomarkers, guidelines and therapeutic options without leaving their existing clinical workflow. The platform went live internally at NYU Langone on June 30, and is now commercially available to other health systems. NYU Langone’s Technology Opportunities and Ventures office is serving as the point of contact for interested health systems.
Solavia is not the first clinical tool NYU Langone has built in-house, and the health system said it did not treat this one as a special case so much as a natural extension of work it has done for years.
“NYU has a strong heritage of successfully translating the outcomes of research and clinical observations into products and services that benefit society, including licensing and the creation of startup companies,” the spokesperson said. “We used this expertise in collaboration with our excellent information technology department, working together from the very start to ensure that Solavia was a strong solution for NYU Langone with a solid business plan to serve other health systems.”
What made Solavia stand out from prior internal builds, according to the health system, was less about the technology itself and more about how far the need for it extended beyond NYU Langone’s own walls.
“Existing pathways solutions solved some of the problems, but we felt that they needed a deep anchor in clinical workflows and how clinicians actually use software,” the spokesperson said. “NYU Langone excels at the interface between technology and clinical benefit. Solavia stood out to us because it addressed a need that extends well beyond our own institution, and we knew our collaboration with Dana-Farber gave the opportunity to help other health systems benefit.”
The commercial structure behind Solavia is a commercial licensing model, with NYU Langone running point on both the technical and business side.
“Solavia is being offered through a commercial licensing model designed to support broad adoption by health systems,” the spokesperson said. “Our focus is on making it as easy as possible for health systems to adopt technology that can improve clinical workflows and patient care. NYU Langone Health is the technical and business lead and will be providing all customer support for the platform.”
Interest from other health systems has followed quickly behind the commercial launch.
“Now that we’ve launched Solavia at NYU Langone Health, we are in active discussions with multiple institutions on licensing this product and are excited by the level of interest,” the spokesperson said.
Solavia launches with Epic integration, with other EHR platforms to follow as commercial demand dictates. NYU Langone’s relationship with Accenture gives new adopters the option of outside support for implementation, change management and rollout.
“Onboarding is designed to be collaborative,” the spokesperson said. “We work closely with each organization to ensure integration of Solavia into its existing clinical and technical environment is successful.”
Dana-Farber’s role in that growth is described in broader terms. Asked whether the Boston-based cancer institute shares in future licensing revenue, the spokesperson did not detail a financial split, characterizing the arrangement instead as a full partnership across the product’s development.
“The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing innovative technologies that improve patient care,” the spokesperson said. “NYU Langone and Dana-Farber are technical, content and business partners in the truest sense and will work together to help Solavia reach its potential.”
For NYU Langone, Solavia is a test of whether an engine built to spin research into startups and licensing deals can do the same with a tool built to live inside another health system’s EHR, one adopter at a time.
